Sunrise or Sunset: When Should You Plan Your Santorini Photoshoot?

Sunrise and sunset can create very different photographs, but neither is automatically the right choice for every Santorini photoshoot. Your preferred background, the direction of the light, your travel plans and the length of your session all matter. Start with the photographs you want, then choose a realistic time and route with your photographer.

Sunrise: Plan the Session Around the First Light

A sunrise session starts before the sun appears. This gives the photographer time to work with the changing light rather than beginning only after sunrise. For Volaeri sunrise planning, allow at least 20 minutes of photography before the predicted sunrise, with the remaining coverage continuing afterwards.

Sunrise may suit you if you are comfortable getting ready early and want the beginning of the day to be part of the experience. Exact conditions depend on the date, weather and viewpoint. A sunrise session does not guarantee an empty location or a visible sun directly behind you.

Before confirming, check how you will reach the meeting point, how long preparation takes and whether your preferred background works with the morning light. If you are arriving by cruise ship, do not choose an early slot without checking your actual time ashore.

Sunset: Include Time After the Sun Goes Down

For a sunset photoshoot, the sunset itself is a moment within the session, not necessarily the finishing time. The light can continue changing afterwards, offering a different atmosphere from the brighter photographs taken earlier.

For a one-hour sunset session, our planning reference is approximately 30 minutes before sunset and 30 minutes after it. For 105 minutes of coverage, the equivalent reference is approximately 75 minutes before sunset and 30 minutes after it. These are planning examples, not additional package inclusions: confirm the actual duration and start time for your selected option.

Weather and the chosen route affect how the final part of the session looks. We cannot promise the same sky or colours as a portfolio photograph.

Morning Can Be the Better Practical Choice

You do not need a sunrise or sunset booking to have a considered, personal gallery. A regular morning session can fit your holiday plans more comfortably. The photographer can recommend a suitable route and adapt posing and camera angles to the light available.

Tell us if the blue domes, a caldera view or close portraits matter most. This helps us prioritise one coherent session instead of spending your coverage moving between distant viewpoints.

Choose the Location and Time Together

Oia and Imerovigli are different settings, and individual viewpoints within each village are different too. Steps, walking distance, public access and the direction of the light should be discussed before you reserve. A private photoshoot means dedicated photography coverage, not exclusive use of public streets or rooftops.

What to Send Before Choosing a Start Time

Send your preferred date, accommodation area, session type and a few examples of the look you like. Mention any walking limitations or fixed travel plans. We can then discuss a start time that makes sense for your location and selected coverage.
